In light of the New Year we want to share with you Gartner’s Top 10 Strategic Technology Trends For 2014 and where we at Brite Connectivity see these technologies going for our customers. But first a little inf: Garter is a technology based consulting firm consisting of over 950 analysts and 500 consultants that provide vital information to 13,000 clients in 85 countries. Clients range from small businesses all the way up the to the Global 50. When looking for information about major innovations, top manufacturers or industry trends, Gartner is the place to go. Each year, the release their predictions for where the technology industry is going and although some of them do not apply to you, our customer base, we wanted to share our thoughts on some of them.

Top 10 Strategic Technology Trends For 2014

1. Mobile Device Diversity & Management
2. Mobile Apps & Applications
3. The Internet of Everything
4. Hybrid Cloud & IT as Service Broker
5. Cloud/Client Architecture
6. The Era of Personal Cloud
7. Software Defined Anything
8. Web-Scale IT
9. Smart Machines
10. 3-D Printing

There are three that we feel are going to be vital to our customers in 2014.

Actually, our first is a combination of two. Mobile Device Diversity and Management as well as The Internet of Everything. We have been supplying and supporting wireless networks for years, but the explosion of devices has changed the face of wireless networking forever. A small business of 20 employees no longer just has an average of 20 computers on their network. With an average of 3-4 devices per user (computer, iPhone, iPad, eReader etc) users are often suffering from poor service and quality of service because the wireless networks they rely on cant keep up with the device count.

Additionally, The Internet of Everything, or the trend of manufacturers to include wireless networking in devices that have never had it, is further increasing the device count a wireless network has to cover. Nest, a consumer focused thermostat is the perfect example. Who would have thought 3 years ago there would be a wifi enabled thermostat allowing you to control your home’s heating and cooling from anywhere in the world?

These trends have shown us that wireless networks installed over the past 5 years are not going to be able to support the needs of users of the next 12-24 months. In addition, relying on the low class router given to you by your ISP is no longer enough to cover your entire business and offer you the services and quality of experience that you want and expect.

The Era of the Personal Cloud is another trend that has been around for a while, however it has exploded in 2013 and shows no sign of slowing down. We have been offering cloud services to our customers for a few years, but as users show up to work with their own cloud based services, there is a certain amount of business risk in allowing them to save their work documents on a public non-company controlled cloud. In 2014, we plan on rolling out our own cloud based onsite and/or offsite backup solution so that our customers can rest assured that their data is safe and that they have complete control over where it is and how long it is kept.

Finally, Mobile Apps & Applications have shown us that we can run our lives and our business in the palm of our hands. Whether you are an avid iPhone user or prefer Android of even (gasp) Blackberry, the way we do business has changed since the advent of the App. We have come to rely on and trust our devices with all of our information and have grown used to whipping out our phones to do everything from making reservations to securing loans and paying off credit cards. This trend is likely to keep moving forward and place apps even more centrally in our lives and our businesses. In 2014, we will be offering a service to convert any customers website into an app as well, allowing you to create a conversation with your customers that you have never had the ability to do. Apps in 2014 are no longer only for huge companies with infinite reach. In 2014 they are going to trickle down to the small businesses so that users can get the same, if not better level of service than from giant corporations.

Those are our picks for technology trends for 2104. We hope you enjoyed reading and hope that if you have any technology needs, you will think of Brite Connectivity first. Happy New Year!
